History: Eleanor Louisa Ross (1877–1958) was the mother of the renowned Canadian poet Al Purdy (1918–2000). Key details regarding their relationship and life together include: Family Structure: Eleanor married Alfred Wellington Purdy in 1915. Al Purdy was their only child. Early Widowhood: After Al's father died when Al was only two or three years old, Eleanor moved with her son to Trenton, Ontario, to live with her father (Al’s grandfather). Literary Influence: Eleanor was a deeply religious woman. While Al Purdy eventually "fell from grace" in her eyes regarding church attendance, her presence and their shared history in the Quinte region of Ontario significantly shaped the landscape of his later poetry. Life in Trenton: Eleanor remained a central figure in Al's early life in Trenton, where he attended school before dropping out to travel the country.
When & where: Christmas afternoon, 1927, a modest home in Trenton, Ontario.
